About Claude Moraes

A former senior MEP I was Chair of the European Parliament's Civil Liberties, Justice & Home Affairs Cttee, the Parliament's most prolific legislative committee responsible for EU Agencies such as Europol, Frontex, EASO (asylum agency) and eu-LISA (IT systems in the EU). I chaired legislative 'trilogues' and represented the Parliament at the JHA Council covering areas such as asylum policy, visa policy, legal migration, data protection and data adequacy, e-privacy, AI, anti-terrorism and security, and international agreements such as Privacy Shield. I was involved in the development of the European Parliament's policy on data protection, security, visas, migration, refugees, Schengen, and Rule of Law. I was a member of the Parliament's Brexit Steering Group from 2016-2019, and Vice President of the Parliament's second largest Group when the UK exited the EU on January 31 2020. Prior to becoming an MEP, I was CEO of a national, independent NGO for seven years and secretary of its charitable wing. Earlier in my career I was a CRE Commissioner and worked at the TUC and House of Commons.
