About Clay Benson

Clay is a Real Estate and Construction Professional with nearly forty years of experience and is both a DBIA Designated Design Build and USGBC LEED Accredited Professional. After nearly seventeen years with Mortenson, Clay retired in January 2022 and has started Capital Projects LLC in partnership with Chris Grundy and Erin Writt. Capital Projects is an Owner Advisory and Strategic Planning business focused on helping Clients deliver real estate and facility solutions. Clay’s roles within Mortenson’s Denver Operating Group included Senior Project Manager, Construction Executive, Director of Preconstruction/Design Phase Management, and Market Director. As Market Director, Clay was responsible for winning and building $125M in corporate and industrial projects annually. While with Mortenson, Clay provided direct leadership on projects valued over $1.0B for Customers such as the US Army Corp of Engineers, Woodward, CoorsTek, Vestas and Lockheed Martin. Over 80 percent of these projects were delivered using the design build delivery method, two winning national Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) awards. Clay graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Management from Colorado State University. After graduation Clay spent ten years with Hensel Phelps Construction, then two years with the Jaynes Corporation in New Mexico before moving back to Colorado to work the following ten years for Pinkard Construction and GE Johnson Construction. Clay served on the Professional Advisory Development Board for Colorado State University’s Construction Management Program from 2015 to 2021. He was on the USGBC Colorado Chapter Board from 2009 through 2012 and Board Chair in 2011. He is a 2011 Graduate of the NREL Energy Executive Program. Clay was a Colorado Springs Urban Renewal Authority Commissioner from 2006 to 2009 and was a Public Director for the AIA Colorado South Chapter in 2007 and 2008. Clay has a personal passion for building high performance teams and deeply understanding his Customer’s business needs so the development, design and construction process provides the best possible business solution for the Customer.
