Background

About Clemens Hoffmann

I'm a senior lecturer in International Politics. My main research interest focus on questions on climate change, decarbonisation conflicts and new forms of energy geopolitics in the Middle East. I analyse these contemporary developments towards the background of the historical development of nature-society relations. Starting from a dialectical historical materialist political ecology, I look at geopolitical processes of post-colonial state formation and the way they appropriate nature. Geographically this work focuses on the entire post-Ottoman world, especially the Balkans, Turkey, Cyprus, the Euphrates and Tigris and Nile valleys. Recent work includes the effects of decarbonisation, both globally and locally. developing the concepts of a 'Geo-Political Ecology','Social Energy' and a 'Geo-Political Economy' of Turkey's new proactive foreign policy.
