Passionate cybersecurity executive/practitioner and retired Coast Guard Commander with more than 30 years of IT and Cybersecurity leadership in military and industry, including the establishment of Security Operations Centers, supporting a Fortune 5 and multiple Fortune 200 companies, and consulting for maritime, defense, finance, and energy sectors as well as federal, state and local governments. Former Deputy CIO of White House Communications Agency and Acting Deputy Commander/Chief of Staff at Coast Guard Cyber Command. While at Coast Guard Cyber Command, provided input to Cyber Executive Order 13636 and Presidential Policy Directive-21. Frequently acted as the Principal for the Coast Guard on Cyber, providing regular briefings to the DHS Deputy Secretary and the Commander of US Cyber Command/Director of the National Security Agency. Adjunct Professor of Cyber Risk Management for University of New Haven's Graduate School of Business.Since joining MAD Security in 2013, has been heavily involved in Governance and Risk Management, developing innovative methodologies and leading Enterprise Risk Assessments, CMMC readiness assessments, governmental Authority to Operate (ATO) efforts, shipboard cybersecurity, container terminal risk assessments, and FFIEC audits for government and commercial organizations, including MARAD, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Wall Street firms, Fortune 100 companies, and the US Coast Guard. Holds an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington, an MS in Information Leadership from the National Defense University (NDU), and a BS in Electrical Engineering from the US Coast Guard Academy. Certifications include C|CISO, CISSP, CISA, and PMP, as well as Masters Certificates from National Defense University in Global Strategic Leadership and Chief Information Officer. Graduate of US Cyber Command’s Joint Advanced Cyber Warfare Course and holds numerous technical certifications, including from RSA, Fortinet, Cisco, and McAfee. In addition to speaking at RSA and DEFCON, he has presented for AFCEA, Area Maritime Security Committees, Port and Waterways conferences, and with numerous BSides, ISACA, and ISC2 chapters.Enthusiastic Coast Guard Auxiliarist/volunteer serving on the National Staff as Director of Cybersecurity, supporting and augmenting Coast Guard active duty efforts to secure critical maritime infrastructure from cyber threats.
