About Cody Cranch

Hello, my name is Cody and I've been working in higher education for over ten years. Currently, I'm a senior lecturer at the University of Illinois Chicago, where I lead a small team of instructors as we co-teach a unique course: Technical Communications and Job Preparation. I created this course from scratch, specifically for the Computer Science department, with the main focus: to train young engineers in real-world communication skills necessary for interviews + career advancement. In addition, I mentor women and non-binary STEM students during a summer micro-internship experience, called Break Through Tech. I am primarily their resume + LinkedIn reviewer, as well as a coach for end-of-internship presentations. Also, most recently, I designed and launched a totally new course, again in Computer Science, that trains our growing body of first-time, undergraduate TAs.Over the past three years, I have upskilled, too, and expanded my interests into instructional design for online learning. All my courses now include hybrid elements, and are based on principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility. My background expertise is teaching ESL, pronunciation/prosody, writing composition, and working closely with immigrant communities, as well as language learners of all ages.Learning Management Systems: Blackboard, Piazza, Canvas, iClicker. Online Teaching: Zoom, Google Meets, Slack. Content Development: Google Docs, Google Slides, MS Word, PowerPoint. Organization: Google Sheets, Google Drive, Box File Sharing, Trello.Summer Upskilling: Canva, Articulate 360.
