About Colin Baker

Colin has over thirty years' experience securing patent protection for inventions in the chemical and medical device fields. Particular areas of interest include personal care compositions, foodstuffs, packaging, refrigerants, petrochemicals, metallurgy and medical devices including stents, catheters, heart valves and dental equipment. As a key specialisation, Colin has extensive experience of proceedings before the European Patent Office Opposition Division and Boards of Appeal, having handled around 150 cases. Colin studied chemistry at the University of Bristol. On leaving university, he joined a research team in a large multinational corporation as a metabolism chemist before training to become a patent attorney. Colin joined the patent profession in 1986 and has gained widespread professional experience from working both in industry and private practice. He worked initially for the Ministry of Defence for three years, and then Unilever for six and a half years, both in the UK and Holland. Subsequently he worked for Withers & Rogers in London for two and a half years. Colin joined Potter Clarkson in 1997, and became a partner in In 2013 he joined the Board of Management, and from 2014 to 2018 he was Managing Partner and on the Board of Management. He has lectured for CEIPI, and on behalf of The European Patent Office on the patenting of chemical inventions. Colin has travelled extensively on business, primarily to the USA.
