About Colin Dawson

My research focuses on using and developing Bayesian statistics and machine learning techniques to gain insight into complex structured phenomena, especially those with a time series component, such as language, music, and human behavior. I make use of both specialized and general purpose tools to facilitate every step in the cycle of data science investigation, ranging from Python and C++ for high performance computing at scale, to R's tidyverse for reproducible data manipulation and visualization, to the Stan language for Bayesian modeling. As an experienced educator I am also interested in ways to communicate statistical concepts in ways that make them as intuitive as possible to non-experts.
