About Colin Marshall
I am a dedicated sports enthusiast with over 13 years of experience in competitive hockey and rowing. I recently graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor's in Kinesiology, specializing in Exercise Science and Training (ES & T). Currently, I am an MSc candidate at the University of British Columbia, focusing on sport psychology. Throughout my academic journey, I actively sought practical experience to enhance my skills. As a graduate in kinesiology, I completed rigorous coursework in Clinical Physiology, Chronic Conditions, Sport Psychology, Training Methods, and Physiological Assessment, as well as formal practicum courses and volunteer hours in various opportunities given to ES & T Option students. In addition to my academic pursuits, I played for the Acadia Axemen Hockey team and served as a Strength and Conditioning Coach intern. In this role, I designed and implemented weight room programming for varsity men's soccer athletes, demonstrating my passion for helping athletes achieve their fitness goals and leading safe, engaging, and rewarding lifts in the High-Performance Centre. My research experience includes working as a research assistant under Dr. Chris Shields, where I conducted two research projects. One, titled" Game Misconduct: Absence of Formal Staff Positions to support the Mental Health of adolescent hockey players playing at Competitive Levels," focused on the lack of mental performance coaches in elite minor hockey, and the other, titled "Hockey Dreams and Family Realities: Parent Perspectives on Supporting Their Child Moving Away to Attend a Specialized Hockey Program," involved conducting nine in-depth interviews. Through this work, I gained valuable experience in data collection, organization, analysis, and an understanding of the importance of mental performance coaching in elite-level sports. As I continue my studies at UBC, I am excited to explore the field of sports psychology further and contribute to the advancement of mental performance coaching in sports.
