Background

About Conor Lucey

Conor Lucey is Assistant Professor in the School of Art History at UCD. Prior to this appointment he was an Irish Research Council/Marie Curie Actions 'Elevate' postdoctoral fellow, based at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (2013-15), and at Trinity College Dublin (2015-16). The principal output of this research is his recent monograph, Building Reputations: Architecture and the Artisan, 1750-1830 (2018), which was published by Manchester University Press and grant-aided by the National University of Ireland and an SAH/Mellon Author Award of the Society of Architectural Historians (USA). In December 2019, Building Reputations was awarded the prestigious Alice Davis Hitchcock Medallion, bestowed annually by the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain for a book that "provides an outstanding contribution to the study or knowledge of architectural history". It was also shortlisted (in the "Single-authored book with a subject 1600-1800" category) for the Historians of British Art book prize (2020). Dr Lucey is an architectural and design historian with interests in a number of related fields, including urban domestic architecture of the eighteenth-century British Atlantic world; the contested relationship between architectural design and building production; neoclassicism and print culture; and the decorative interior in Europe, 1660-1830. Essays on these topics have appeared in edited collections and in international peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, The Burlington Magazine, and Architectural History. Forthcoming publications include a study of the reception of eighteenth-century Irish architecture in twentieth-century British architectural histories; an investigation into the roles of women in the early modern building industry; and a thematic essay on design as both a profession and a trade in Enlightenment Europe. A regular speaker at major international conferences devoted to art, architectural and urban histories, Dr Lucey sits on the editorial board of Vernacular Architecture and Irish Architectural & Decorative Studies journals, and has acted as a reader/peer-reviewer for Architectural Histories and Home Cultures, among others. A former President of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland (2017-2020), he is a Board Member of the Irish Georgian Foundation and a Committee Member of the Irish Architectural Archive.
