About Constance Gordon

I am an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at San Francisco State University where I'm also a core faculty member and advisor for Climate HQ's Climate Change Certificate Program and the Climate Justice Leaders Initiative. Broadly, my academic research engages the rhetoric and critical organizing practices of place-based food justice and environmental justice movements as they generate intersectional political critique, facilitate mutual aid, and build alliances across geographies. I value transdisciplinary, collaborative, and praxis-oriented research projects and critical pedagogy. I also teach a variety of graduate and undergraduate classes on subjects like environmental justice communication, climate justice communication, critical organizational communication, leadership for social change, public speaking and advocacy, among others. My courses often emphasize non-dominant accounts of disciplinary histories and the theory-building, narrative strategies, and artistic praxis of various social change efforts. I hold a variety of other roles as well, such as Art Director of Cultural Studies, Editorial Board member of Environmental Communication, Department Representative for the California Faculty Association (the CSU faculty union), and others.
