About Corey White

Hi, I've been coding and doing geospatial work for 15+ years. I enjoy creating software and developing ideas that improve people's lives and helping others around me meet their potential. Career: I've worked for three local governments/municipalities in multiple departments, including IT, Public Works, Public Utilities, and Parks and Recreation. My roots are in GIS, where I started as a GIS Technician creating large geospatial datasets. My roles transitioned into analysis, programming, DevOps, and DBA work. Next, I worked for the award-winning sustainability, health, wellness, and fitness startup JouleBug as a software engineer before transitioning to technical lead. At JouleBug, we encouraged people worldwide to create lasting positive habits through the gamification of everyday actions. At JouleBug, I work in all areas of development, including frontend, backend, DevOps, mobile (Object C, Swift, Java), and anything else we need to do. My most significant accomplishments at JouleBug were designing and developing our online dashboard from the ground up using AngularJS and Scala Play Framework, designing and implementing our AWS VPC, and containerizing our development and production stacks for use with Amazon ECS. I received my Ph.D. in Geospatial Analytics from the Center for Geospatial Analytics at North Carolina State University. I am the network coordinator for TomorrowNow an NSF-funded research coordination network developing a spatially explicit serious gaming platform for smart and connect communities that enables equitable community engagement through participatory modeling. Through stakeholder workshops and public symposiums, we are co-developing a prototype of TomorrowNow focusing on stormwater management issues in the Triangle region of North Carolina. Interests: Participatory modeling, urban growth and hydrological modeling, geovisualization, distributed computing, open-source software development, real-time analytics for large spatial datasets. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking with my dogs, mountain biking, playing guitar, weightlifting, tennis, backpacking, paddle boarding, and cooking.
