About Cormac Powell

Dr. Powell is part of the Sport Ireland High Performance Unit, which aims to support the achievement of a number of objectives, primarily the delivery of systemic and sustained success at European, World, Olympic and Paralympic level. Dr. Powell has extensive academic and research experience, having previously held a post-doctoral position in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick, where he was also the project manager for a large all-Ireland physical activity surveillance type study. Dr. Powell has a strong publication profile, having published in a number of Q1 journals, in topics ranging from physical activity and cardiometabolic health, to performance trends/predictions and the physiology of high performance athletes. Dr. Powell holds a PhD and a first class honours BSc in sport and exercise sciences. Dr. Powell has a wealth of practical and applied experience in high performance swimming and diving programmes, having held both coaching and sports science/sports medicine roles in a number of National Training Centres, which catered for athletes on National Squads and National Teams. Dr. Powell has been a team member at major international competitions (FINA World Long Course Championships 2019 and LEN European Short Course Championships 2019), and has directly worked with athletes who have represented Ireland at European, World and Olympic level, including the Tokyo Olympic Games.
