About Cory Hitt

My name is Cory Hitt, and I am a copy editor, writer and researcher with ten years of experience. I currently sub-edit four print titles for Scottish papers owned by media company DC Thomson: The Courier; The Press & Journal; The Evening Express; and The Evening Telegraph. I have extensive knowledge of Adobe InDesign and InCopy, as well as Prestige/Atex content management system and our photo management database (GN4/Tark). I've received additional in-depth training in InDesign formatting as well as media law, IPSO standards and SEO. My time as a research fellow on an EU-funded, multi-national training network gave me deep experience with writing for various target audiences, ranging from academia, to business and government. The ten years I've spent working with the written word have given me a sharp eye for grammatical perfection, linguistic precision and stylistic consistency. It's also given me a keen understanding of how to improve copy written by other writers and how to draw potential readers into a story. I've also done a great deal of writing myself ­– from my time working at Aerospace Industries Association producing copy for our industry members and legislators, to my doctoral thesis in history and even to my personal blog (coffeespoonsblog.com) where I wrote on beauty and wellness for a general audience. I received a PhD in Mediaeval History from the University of St Andrews in 2017 and a BA (Honours) in English from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA. My areas of expertise include history, literature, law, and economics. I also specialise in language editing for by non-native speakers and has worked with clients at a number of European universities seeking to publish in English-language journals. I have proofread academic publications in the fields of chemistry, biology, and physics. Other previous clients include Oxford University Press, Pearson PLC, Wildy, Families Against Mandatory Minimum (FAMM), Proof-Reading-Service.com, and others. Prior to becoming a professional editor, I worked in communications and legislative affairs for the Aerospace Industries Association (Washington, DC). I have also held two academic posts as an Early Stage Researcher for Power and Institutions in Medieval Islam and Christendom and as a post-doctoral fellow at the St Andrew’s Institute for Legal and Constitutional Research on the EU-funded Civil Law, Common Law, Customary Law project.
