Background
About Curt Pollman
Dr. Curtis D. Pollman is the President of Aqua Lux Lucis, Inc, a scientific consulting firm that specializes in modeling and analysis of environmental data to help inform environmental policy. This modeling ranges from sophisticated statistical (empirical) models to deterministic (process-oriented) models to elucidate the key processes governing the behavior of contaminants or metrics of biological response in aquatic ecosystems, and has included hybrid modeling approaches as well. Dr. Pollman also provides conceptual modeling to clients seeking to quickly assess the priority or importance of environmental issues and uncertainties, with the objective of efficiently allocating scarce resources to solving pressing environmental problems. This modeling reflects Dr. Pollman’s broad-based understanding of environmental dynamics, including the interplay between atmospheric processes (emissions and transport), terrestrial transport, and aquatic cycling, and his ability to integrate those dynamics in a conceptually sound, quantitative framework. His most recent work has included: • Guiding development of a mercury cycling model for the Gulf of Mexico; • Development of statistical models to predict regional distributions of mercury in fish and Florida’s lakes & streams; • Development of a stressor identification model that quantifies the roles of various landscape and water quality factors on biological integrity in Florida’s streams; • Modeling sulfate as a driver of mercury methylation and temporal change in fish tissue concentrations in the Everglades; • Ongoing guidance to a start-up venture evaluating the efficacy of and environmental issues related to a novel technology for removing phosphorus and other contaminants from water, wastewater, and aquatic ecosystems; and • Develop and apply a relatively simple dynamic model to predict phosphorus cycling and the effects of sediment resuspension in a large, shallow eutrophic lake to guide lake restoration strategies.
