Background

About Curtis Hill

Black Excellence (or BHM Matters)! February 2024 has been a worldwide of activities that started with (Feb 1-2) on the campus of University of Texas at Arlington. I served as a co-facilitator with my colleague and fellow mental health counselor Dr. Kim Toynes. We shared with participants how to have a Safe Conversation instead of a "messy" one. And integrated an ethics component for therapists that addressed non-malfesence, receiving gifts, and dual relationships. February 12-24, 2024 we rolled into the TABPHE conference in Frisco. I had the honor of moderating a panel discussion with a distinguished group of young and seasoned Black Professionals at the TABPHE (Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education) Graduate Institute. The educational talent pool was off the charts with three discussants having earned terminal (Ph.D.) and professional (Ed.D.) doctorate degrees. And two others with freshly minted masters degrees, Ashley Davis and Tamara Turnbo. Also, embedded within the Graduate Institute was an introduction to the 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace where I offered a free book by Chapman and White to augment one's self awareness to improve your productivity as a higher education professional. During the 51st TABPHE conference as well I had the opportunity to offer a workshop on empathy in the workplace. That presentation was well received as participants learned that at the heart of empathetic leadership is learning to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is a precursor leading to trust, respect and even loyalty to an organization. The close of February will be just as powerful as the beginning as I have the pleasure of sharing the stage with the likes of State Senator Royce West, Dr. Gregory Newman (UTD), Charles O'Neal (US Black Chambers, Inc), and other members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. to discuss "Standing on Business" Wednesday, Feb 28 at 10 a m. on the Dallas College Cedar Valley Campus. Black Excellence has been on display the entire month and this is only a part of my story.#blackexcellence
