About Dalton Rawcliffe

I am a historian of Modern China and the British Empire, specializing in the Cold War, Hong Kong, and how transnational contact has shaped the modern world. My current research examines the transnational impact of the Cultural Revolution and the Hong Kong 1967 Leftist Riots on Great Britain, more specifically, the production, dissemination, and use of propaganda within the Chinese community living in Britain during the 1960s and 1970s. My research reveals that it was not so much that the Hong Kong Chinese had become true followers of Maoism but were socio-economically frustrated with the indifferent attitude shown by the British and Hong Kong governments towards the community's well-being. Thus, my research speaks volumes to the complex phenomenon we dub "colonialism" without distinguishing nuances. Furthermore, I have published and presented to academic and non-academic audiences in Canada, the United States, and Britain.
