About Damla Tamer
Damla Tamer (b. 1986, Istanbul, Turkey) is a visual artist, educator, and organizer based onthe unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (Vancouver,Canada). Her work has been showcased in solo exhibitions at Access Gallery (Vancouver,2024), Gibsons Public Art Gallery (Gibsons, 2022), Darling Foundry (Montreal, 2013), and theFifty Fifty Arts Collective (Victoria, 2018). Her art was also featured on the cover of TheCapilano Review (3.42: Translingual).Tamer has been the recipient of numerous grants and international fellowships, including aresidency at Stundars Museum in Finland and the Leighton Independent Residency at theBanff Centre for Visual Arts in Canada. In 2024, she was shortlisted for the prestigiousShadbolt Fellowship in Arts and Humanities. Her Shadbolt project examines the aesthetics ofsolidarity through the lens of law, focusing on the urban space-time of Çağlayan Courthousein Istanbul via textile-based works.In addition to her individual practice, Tamer is actively engaged in social and collaborativework as a member of various artist collectives, most notably A.M.(Art Mamas). A.M. seeks tocreate support networks for artist caregivers while critically addressing the intersection of carework and the dominant culture of art production. The collective has organized forums withartists, caregivers, and unions, culminating in the publication of a book addressing caregivingissues in the arts.
