Background

About Dan Cornick

I’m hugely passionate for embracing AI and digitalisation, with strong interests in BIM and computational design. Both to change how we work, but also to create robust workflows between Revit & Rhino to numerous analytical packages. This enthusiasm led to me applying for the IStructE computational panel for 2025. I started my career in 2014 as a Structural Technician at Ramboll and quickly stumbled across the world of visual programming. This grew to learn how to code (Python & C#) for quick wins on automating repetitive tasks and eliminating time consuming changes. This stemmed to working on parametric projects both nationally and internationally, such a geometry generator for British Antarctic Survey’s Discovery Building, automating drawing production for modular CLT houses, and a structural frame generator for embodied carbon comparisons between materials & grids. I also developed tools to speed up drawing RC intents and 3D RC within Revit. I also undertook studying a part-time BEng(Hons) in civil engineering too allow for me to integrate design and analysis within these scripts. Alongside achieving first-class honours, I won the IStructE Surrey Branch award for my dissertation and runner-up in the ICE Southern Branch Emerging Engineers award. I joined London Structures Lab in late 2021 to continue my development as a Structural Engineer. I’ve been involved with Park Lane Mews hotel, Old Brewer’s Yard in Covent Garden, and most significantly One Golden Lane - a £58m cut & carve located in the City of London. I’ve also played an instrumental part in developing our steel-reuse tool, which won a BREEAM innovation credit for One Golden Lane. This will allow One Golden Lane to be first project to reuse steel from the existing site in the proposed development. Pastorally I've had the chance to lecture and mentor undergraduate students at London South Bank University, which has been a very rewarding opportunity.
