About Dan Flew

Dan is an ecologist with experience in protected species surveying and site assessments, currently holds 3 protected species surveying licenses, these include a Class 2 science and conservation NE Bat license, Class 1 NE Great Crested Newt license, a NE Barn owl survey licence, and also a NRW Bat licence. Dan is also on the board of trustees for Arnos vale cemetery (charity) helping to maintain and enhance the site for wildlife and visitors. As an artist, Dan has regular pet portrait commissions, has artwork on information boards and has work published. Dan's MSc dissertation looked at the ecology of Lesser horseshoe bats in an urban environment within the city of Bristol and looked at how valuable different survey methods were for this species. Dan is a keen Herpetologist, and enjoys reptile recording. Although not primarily a botanist, Dan is very keen on flora, and likes to focus on fern identification. Dan also likes to help inform the public on wildlife in his local area by giving walks and talks, and below are some examples.* Arnos Vale Cemetery, Tour guide leading Bat walks since 2011 with a regular crowed of 30+ people.* Writing Wildlife articles for the Talk of Totterdown, a local newsletter/ paper (2012 - 2021)* Conducting bat research and monitoring with the local bat group, regularly arranging meet ups and events.* Adder surveys with RAGS 2017 seen Dan appear on BBC 1, talking about nocturnal wildlife in cemeteries, this was on countryfile. He was also on BBC radio 4 talking about bats and goth culture on two separate programs. 2022 BBC earth podcast episode GHOSTS talking about bats. Dan has also had success with an event he founded in 2017 and was involved with until 2020. The event usually includes a display of art work, a literature reading, a tour of the grounds and music. The event is annual and has been a sell out success every year.
