About Dan Malleck
I research, think, and write about the policy of alcohol and drug regulation, and the regulation of associated activities often called "vices." I provide historically grounded analysis to inform contemporary policy. At the same time, I think it is important to question our assumptions about issues that are often caricatured. Why do we believe what we believe? It drives my health science students crazy. I feel viscerally the need to support junior colleagues and more vulnerable administrative staff. It seems to me to be an appropriate use of the privileged position in which I find myself. The business I am in has a long tradition of elitism, and I have been a beneficiary of that system. In my work as a chair, a director, and a professor, I have tried my best to support those who are in disadvantaged and vulnerable positions, and clap back at those who misuse their privilege, and punch down for personal gain.
