29 years of experience in the specification, engineering, and design of high-voltage transmission facilities specializing in protection and controls for transmission, distribution and generation facilities. This includes developing and specifying interconnection requirements, from either a system or project perspective such that local and national codes are met, appropriate reliability is achieved, and costs are managed. Have applied these skills on projects across Canada, in the United States, and New Zealand. Leadership: • Extensive experience in the leadership of employees and contractors responsible for the design or specification of transmission facilities including substations, SCADA, and telecommunication facilities up to and including 500 kV. This includes providing strategic and technical leadership for teams as large as 60+ staff designing transmission facilities • Providing technical leadership for clients and industry through the development of technical standards, rules, practices, and project functional specifications to ensure an appropriate balance between system reliability and costs. Engineering Design and Strategy: • Accountable for the review or approval of all AESO project functional specifications including the Montana Alberta Tie Line, the Ft Mac 500kV transmission line, the two 500kV HVDC lines, and all renewable generation facilities. • Responsible for the development and maintenance of system interconnection standards and AESO rules including; protection and control, metering, generation, industrial load, transmission lines, substations, SCADA, and communications. Change Management: • Established and implemented the process for review and adoption of NERC’s mandatory reliability standards within Alberta. • With the sale of TransAlta’s transmission assets, transitioned a utility design team from TransAlta to SNC Lavalin (a for profit consulting company) Industry Boards / Participation: • Alberta Power Industrial Consortium (APIC) – Board Member representing AESO. • Western Electric Coordination Council (Relay Work Group) Alberta representative.
