About Dan Smith

I've worked in a wide range of computer related jobs starting in 1979 to the present. I always enjoy solving hard problems and especially debugging difficult issues. I've been able to apply these skills in areas from communication and network hardware, protocols to helping design and build large distributed systems such as the AOL chat system. I still have a fondness for working at the interface of hardware / software but that's becoming rare these days. My goals are to keep working on projects that are challenging and interesting. Specialties: In my current job I've been able to get back to the interface between the hardware and the application. It has been a joy to get something working that eludes other programmers. I've found that the ability to break down a communication trace and understand timing issues and poorly documented protocols is highly useful. I have always enjoyed solving puzzles of all kinds.
