Background
About Dan Vandeloo
Hello, my name is Dan! My passion for the environment and enthusiasm for learning serve as joint motivators, driving my interest in researching solutions for environmental degradation. Moreover, these traits have assisted in achieving academic success, establishing career priorities, and incentivizing volunteer efforts. Academic Experience By completing Fleming College’s Ecological Restoration program, I gained applicable knowledge in Ontario wildlife identification and the ability to perform contemporary field techniques. My academic career continued at Trent University as I completed the Ecological Restoration Honours undergraduate program. There, I predominantly focused my studies and research on environmental subjects relating to soil remediation, revegetation techniques, and successional ecological interactions. I am currently an M.Sc candidate for Trent University's Environmental and Life Science program (Sep 2024). My master's research will investigate the beneficial microclimates on designed soils, created by nurse plants, as a mine site revegetation strategy. Career Objectives I intend to pursue a career as a restoration ecologist, specializing in novel approaches to recover ecosystems affected by mining activity. My education and employment at Trent has provided me with a foundational research skillset and an early network of environmental professionals. After additionally completing graduate school at Trent, I intend to commit my passion and enthusiasm towards collaborating with conservationists, scientists, and communities, to bridge the gap between restoration theory and execution. Community Engagement From 2023 to 2024 I was a member of the SER-TU nursery subcommittee. The intention of this group is to establish an active plant and seed orchard at Trent for education and reclamation purposes. In addition, a group of my fellow peers and I have organized a monthly ecological restoration speaker series. This speaker series has connected students with professional restorationists. Since 2021, I have volunteered by leading guided tree and plant identification tours for Kawartha Conservation and various public groups. LinkedIn Intetions Growing a network of diversified professionals provides additional opportunities to exchange ideas and gain new perspectives. I am keen on connecting with other individuals interested in ecological restoration and general environmental professionalism. Please feel free to reach out and discuss mutual professional development, collaborative projects, or general inquiries.
