About Daniel Botkin
Daniel Botkin is a scientist who studies life from a planetary perspective, a biologist who has helped solve major environmental issues, and a writer about nature. A frequent public speaker, Botkin brings an unusual perspective to his subject. Well-known for his scientific contributions in ecology and environment, he has also worked as a professional journalist and has degrees in physics, biology, and literature. His books and lectures show how our cultural legacy often dominates what we believe to be scientific solutions. He discusses the roles of scientists, businessmen, stakeholders, and government agencies in new approaches to environmental issues. He uses historical accounts by Lewis and Clark and Henry David Thoreau to discuss the character of nature and the relationship between people and nature. He has published 18 books, including books about nature and environment theory and practice; textbooks for undergraduates; professional books, such as Discordant Harmonies: A New Ecology for the 21st Century; No Man’s Garden: Thoreau and a New Vision for Civilization and Nature; Beyond the Stony Mountains: Nature in the American West from Lewis and Clark to Today. A novel, Tsavo: Oddball Researchers Use Data and Guns to Save African Elephants. Among his awards are the recent: Male Visionary of the Year for 2021 the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) Environmental Scientist of the Decade 2020 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP), Marquis Who’s Who 2019 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award for Environmental Science and Writing Who’s Who Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, 2018 Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, John C. Pritzlaff Conservation Award, 2012. His research has included development of the first successful computer model in ecology, JABOWA, a computer program that forecasts forest growth and has been accurately validated; research to help save endangered species, including the sandhill crane; California Condor; African Elephant; and Bowhead Whales. He has been directed research projects to assist U.S. states and other nations solve environmental problems
