About Daniel Coderre

I'm a former experimental physicist, current data scientist at Switzerland's yellow-est retail bank. My career so far has spanned multiple countries, completely different subject matter areas, and diverse social and technical environments. But one thing has remained constant: I'm always working with data, usually a whole lot of it, and I repeatedly find myself in the situation of building complete, large-scale projects from scratch. In academics I wrote analytical C++ code and deployed it in HPC centers to process huge amounts of particle collision data. I built the data-readout system for the world's most sensitive dark matter detector (and its upgrade!) that read, digitized, and analyzed literal petabytes of data from electrical signals to programmatic data structures. I mean, fine, this data turned out to be empty except a couple thermal neutrons, but it could have had dark matter in it. You have to try. In banking I started in a team looking to migrate into a modern, open-source ML system. From a blank slate I built a Kubernetes-orchstrated, spark-driven, lakehouse-backed, automated feature engineering and machine learning production platform, deployed in the productive IT landscape of a highly regulated Swiss bank. More recently I've constructed Switzerland's first (I think, correct me if not) machine-learning driven money laundering alert processing system, employing statistical methods to reduce manual review costs and protect customer privacy. I've worked on backends and frontends. Tuned database deployments and given keynote talks on the same day. Cut my fingers on cable-ties and written productive software code in multiple languages. I've taught lectures and led teams. I've been around the world, collaborating remotely and locally across 4 continents, so far. I have a passion for building something out of nothing and watching it go on to create value, whether that value be knowledge, money, or something else. I'm currently living and working in the Bern region of Switzerland and have unrestricted work permission in both Switzerland and the USA.
