About Daniel Danny Leiva

As a fellowship trained American Board of Emergency Medicine-certified physician, I bring significant experience to the table in areas of wilderness and academic medicine. I hold a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Nova Southeastern University. I graduated from the emergency medicine program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School-Baystate Medical Center, a 716-bed independent academic level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center in Western Massachusetts which has more than emergency department visits per year.My postdoctoral training has included a Fellowship in Wilderness Medicine with a concentration in research medicine from Baystate Medical Center, as well as a Certificate in Hyperbaric Medicine Team Training from International ATMO. I am also a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM), and a current candidate for the Wilderness Medical Society’s Diploma in Dive and Marine Medicine (DiDMM).In addition to my academic achievements, I have held a variety of academic appointments throughout my career. I am currently a core faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at HCA Kendall Regional Medical Center, as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Florida International University - Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Previously, I served as an Instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UMMS-Baystate.I have received several honors and awards for my work, including Outstanding Contribution to the Emergency Medicine Residency at Kendall Regional Medical Center and scholarships for the Masters of Wilderness Medicine Conference and the Medicine in the Wild Elective at the Wilderness Medicine Institute.Currently, in my early career development phase as an academic-focused physician, I play a significant role in resident education at HCA Kendall Regional Medical center’s emergency medicine residency. I love helping organize our weekly didactic conference and lectures, facilitate small group discussions, and lead sim cases. I am also a member of the Wilderness Medical Society’s resident/student education committee with recent and active projects that include developing their monthly journal club (in addition to being a presenter), mentor-mentee program, and student scholarship application process.My background and experience make me a valuable asset to any team in need of emergency medicine expertise, and I hope to not only treat patients but to also contribute to the field of medicine through research and education.
