About Daniel Gibson

I’ve always believed that if biology can write itself, we should be able to write it too. That idea has driven most of my career — from creating Gibson Assembly®, to building the world’s first synthetic cell, and now to developing technologies that make DNA synthesis faster, smarter, and more accessible.After earning my undergraduate degree from SUNY Buffalo and then my Ph.D. from the University of Southern California, I joined the J. Craig Venter Institute where our team built the first synthetic bacterial genome (2008) and the first synthetic cell (2010). I later moved to Synthetic Genomics, where we developed rapid methods for synthesizing influenza genes used in synthetic flu vaccine production (2013) and, together with JCVI scientists, synthesized the first minimal cell (2016).In 2012, I co-founded SGI-DNA (now Telesis Bio), where I serve as Chief Technology Officer. My team and I developed the foundational technology behind the BioXp® system and the Digital-to-Biological Converter, and we continue to advance the company’s next-generation SOLA enzymatic DNA synthesis platform — the first sustainable, industrialized, high-throughput solution for on-demand, high-quality DNA.In addition, I serve as Co-Founder and Board Member of Mimulus, and Advisor and Board Member of Racer Biosciences.
