About Daniel Giebels

PhD and Master in Early Modern History at the University of Coimbra (2016; 2008) and graduated in Cultural Heritage by the University of Algarve (2004). He is an integrated researcher of the Center for the History of Society and Culture (CHSC) and a collaborator of the Centre of Religious History Studies (CEHR). Since 2019, he has been a member of the external consultants council of the Archive Bulletin of the University of Coimbra, a magazine indexed in SCOPUS. He has been involved in various Portuguese and International projects, funded by institutions such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (FCG) and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), namely:"Cliohres.net", by the University of Coimbra (2006);"Portugaliae Monumenta Misericordiarum"(2008) and "Convents and Monasteries of Portugal (1096-1901): spatiality and temporalities "(2019-2020), both by the CEHR;"ReligionAJE - Religion, administration and ecclesiastical justice in the Portuguese Empire (1514-1750)", by the CHSC (2018-2021), where he's currently developing a study on the performance of the Inquisition, the Church and the Jesuits in the portugueses settlements in North Africa. He also carried out several studies for public entities such as the Direção Geral para os Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais (DGEMN)(2005-2006), the Direcção Regional da Cultura do Algarve (2005) and for some city councils, such as Faro, Tavira and Loulé, contributing to cultural events open to the local community. Author of several articles in scientific journals and also of the first book published on the Lisbon Inquisition (2018, by Gradiva), with communications at national and international events, highlighting its participation in the International Symposium on the Inquisition"(University of Alcalá, Madrid, 2015) and in the Congress entitled "The government of the bishops in the dioceses of the portuguese seaborn empire, from Asia to America 1514-1750"(Federal University Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, 2019). In 2015, he was co-winner of the 1st National Prize for Historical Essay António Rosa Mendes. His main areas of research are: Religious History; Inquisition; Early Modern Witchcraft; Portuguese Early Modern History; Portuguese Seaborne Empire.
