About Daniel L. Howard

I am a Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, an Associated Faculty Member of the Diversity Science Research Cluster, an Affiliated Professor in the Department of Sociology and in the Africana Studies Program, and PPRI Professor and Fellow in the Public Policy Research Institute, all in the College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University, College Station. My expertise and experience in the area of health policy and social science research, my proven ability to conceptualize, build, and lead a nationally-recognized education and training program and an exceptional research institute, my established record of research accomplishments and scholarly publications, and my resolve to make a difference have prepared me to provide exemplary leadership, teaching, research, and mentorship. My Bachelor’s Degree in Economics is from the University of Michigan College of Literature, Sciences, and Arts in 1987 and my Ph.D. in Policy Development and Program Evaluation is from Vanderbilt University Peabody College of Education and Human Development in 1992. I completed a two-year postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and School of Social Work as a Paul Cornely Postdoctoral Scholar and Ford Foundation / Rockefeller Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in 1994. I also completed a two-year postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research as a Health Services Research Postdoctoral Fellow funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality National Research Service Award in 1998. I have been appointed as a Senior Research Fellow at the UNC-CH Sheps Center (2002-2025). My research interests include examination of epidemiologic patterns of health outcomes that disproportionately affect African Americans; minority health and health disparities; and, health policy and health services, as evidenced by numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts in prominent journals. I have served as PI or co-PI on grant research totaling approximately $49 million dollars funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the United States Department of Defense, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which pertain to health services, minority health, racial health disparities research, and health policy.
