About Daniel Melo

Daniel Melo was born in Brussels in 1970. Doctorate in contemporary history by ISCTE-IUL (Lisbon, 2003). His Ph. D. dissertation, A leitura pública no Portugal contemporâneo (1926-1987)[‘Public reading in contemporary Portugal’], was distinguished with the Contemporary History Prize Victor de Sá and published by Imprensa de Ciências Sociais (ICS), in 2004. He is a Research fellow at the CHAM — Centre for the Humanities of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa since 2013. His main research areas are cultural policy, public reading, book history, popular education, socio-cultural associations and migrations. His Master’s thesis on Salazarismo e cultura popular (1933-58)[‘Salazarism and popular culture’] was also distinguished with the ‘Victor de Sá’ Prize and published by ICS, in 2001. Melo has updated and expanded those works in the books Estado Novo e cultura popular (Angelus Novus) and A leitura pública na I República (Húmus), both in 2010. Among his latest works are the book chapter “A cultura”, in História Contemporânea de Portugal (Lisbon, Objetiva, 2015, v.4) and the book História e património da edição - a Romano Torres (CHAM & Húmus, 2015).
