About Daniel Patrick Atwater

My curiosity about Earth's physical, chemical and biological systems has shaped my professional pursuits. I do this using the scientific method and evidence-based analysis. For a significant part of my career, I used remote sensors to map ocean surface currents and waves, to gain insights into the dynamics of the near-shore upper ocean. Recently, I have leveraged extensive climatological datasets and real-time forecasting products to enhance the operational capabilities of the Australian Navy. This journey included learning and practicing the foundations of maritime navigation and becoming the leader of a small group of personnel in charge of safely driving a ship and conducting naval and maritime operations in many different geographic regions. I am a Naval Officer, coastal oceanographer, and sea ice scientist with a decade of early career experience, a decade of military and operational meteorology and oceanography experience, and a number of years studying the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.
