Background
About Daniel Paul Odonnell
I have a long history of effective leadership in Higher Education, focussing particularly on an ability to mobilise and rally researchers and teachers from across the disciplines. I am currently chair of the Department of English at the University of Lethbridge, Past President of the University of Lethbridge Faculty Association (ULFA), and the Confederation of Alberta Faculty Associations (CAFA). At ULFA, I have been Vice President and Chief Negotiator (two rounds of bargaining). Over the last decade, I have helped lead Members through three rounds of contract negotiations and a six week strike and lockout. I have also helped revive academic governance organs, including supporting greater faculty participation on the General Faculties Council (our academic senate) and in topic-oriented working groups. I also have considerable experience in developing and leading communities of practice and societies focussed primarily on the Digital Humanities (DH) and Open Science (OS). I was/am the founding chair or president of the following scholarly societies:* Humanities Data Inquiry (2021-). Open Science data practices in the Humanities * Global Outlook : Digital Humanities (2012-2015). Promoting collaboration among researchers in the Global North and Global South.* Digital Medievalist (2003-2009). Early international research community for medievalists working with computation. I was also president/chair of the following national and international societies:* Force11 (Future of Research Communications and e-Scholarship)(2018-2019).* Canadian Society for Digital Humanities (2010-2013).* Text Encoding Initiative Consortium (2006-2011). My research interests involve research and practice in Digital Cultural Heritage, the Semantic Web, Editorial and Textual theory, the sustainability of scholarly communication, the place of the University in society in the Digital Age, and improving connections among Digital Humanists in high and lesser income economies. I am a frequent speaker and media contributor on subjects such as the integration of the digital into post-secondary research and teaching, the future of the academy, and the place of the university in the digital age. I have received well over $1 million in external funding from five different agencies as Principal Investigator and have served on nearly a dozen Triagency Grant Committees, including three terms as chair.
