About Daniel Rissi

I am an Associate Professor at the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. My assigned allocation of effort is 75% diagnostic service and 25% teaching/scholarly activities. Diagnostic service includes daily surgical biopsy specimens (15-25 cases/day), with a turnaround time of approximately 1-2 days. Surgical biopsy cases are mainly from dogs and cats, occasionally from horses, and rarely from food animals, birds, and exotic animal species. During autopsy service (occasional weekend duty), I supervise a group of 2-3 fourth-year veterinary students enrolled in the Diagnostic Pathology rotation. Autopsy cases consist primarily of domestic animals and occasionally birds and exotic animals. My teaching activities consist of anatomic pathology residency training. Diagnostic pathology training includes surgical biopsy evaluation (optional to residents with interest in diagnostic pathology) and autopsy service training (as part of their residency requirement). Taught courses include Gross Pathology, Diagnostic Oncology (Epithelial Neoplasms of the Skin), Microscopic Pathology (Basic Dermatopathology), Advanced Microscopic Pathology (Advanced Dermatopathology), and Diagnostic Pathology Rounds. My collaborative research includes participation in the National Institutes of Health Comparative Brain Tumor Consortium (canine glioma and canine meningioma pathology board) and pathology support work with other primary investigators. My areas of interests are diagnostic pathology, surgical biopsy, neuropathology, and scientific critical thinking.
