Background

About Daniel Scott

My group focuses on the development and optimization of simple and accurate point-of-care diagnostic devices, based on a unique combination of nanotechnology, biochemistry, and engineering. We are working to create cost efficient solutions that can be used by both trained or untrained personnel to detect nucleotide, protein, and small molecule disease biomarkers. The devices will find applications in offices/clinics, at-home testing, Telehealth, developing countries, underserved, remote, and rural situations where accurate diagnosis is needed but not always available. Future applications will include expansion into the food, beverage, and manufacturing industries. The current development of point-of-care diagnostics has cumulated from a broad range of experience in several interdisciplinary fields. This includes experience with genetic engineering and manipulation for recombinant protein expression followed by purification, and characterization. Many of these genetically engineered proteins were employed in biosensor development which accompanied experience with analytical assay design, development, and optimization. My genetic engineering expertise has also been applied to anti-cancer natural product biosynthesis, isolation, structure elucidation, and biological activity investigation both in vitro and in vivo. These novel analogues were then enhanced through the use of engineered drug delivery vehicles. The drug delivery vehicles were based on several different nanoparticle platforms broadly encompassed under polymer nanoparticle systems, but also including inorganic materials. These nanoparticle systems underwent complete characterization and were optimized for stability and performance. Specialties: Analytical and Biological Chemistry, Assay Design, Molecular Biology, Polymer Chemisty, Nanotechnology, Natural Products, Cancer, and Device Engineering.
