Background
About Daniel Simon
Daniel Simon received his Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Georgia, Athens (USA) in where he participated in theoretical condensed matter research under Michael Geller. In 2001, he began his graduate work in the Physics department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (USA). In Santa Cruz, Daniel was inspired by some preliminary experiments on measuring and mimicking neural signaling carried out by Sue Carter’s team. After joining her group, he spent years tinkering with biomimetic electrochemical circuits – his first real foray into bioelectronics – as well as studying light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) and and nanoparticle-based non-volatile memory (in collaboration with Campbell Scott and Luisa Bozano at IBM Almaden). In 2007 he earned his PhD, and together with his wife and daughter, decided to try life in Sweden. Daniel joined the Laboratory of Organic Electronics as a postdoctoral researcher, and was able to delve deeper into bioelectronics, with the ultimate hope of developing new tools to help people suffering from neurological disorders. He focused on converting an in vitro drug/pharma delivery technology for use in a living animal, and later for self-regulating artificial neuron functionality. Since 2011, Daniel has led – and significantly expanded – the Organic Bioelectronics group of the Laboratory of Organic Electronics, becoming Assistant Professor in 2013, Associate Professor (docent) in 2016, and full Professor in 2022. In 2022, he also joined the Program Office of the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org) where he oversees academic and industrial research projects. He’s very happy with his transition to Sweden… but occasionally misses the beach.
