About Daniel Sobota

I am a watershed scientist with extensive experience in water quality and environmental management. I have worked individually, as a group leader, and as a team member on local, regional, and national projects. For my work, I have translated complex scientific concepts into terms understandable by the public. My past and current projects include-Using satellite and field data to detect, monitor, and manage harmful algal blooms -Dissolved oxygen dynamics in Pacific Northwest rivers -Fecal bacteria contamination of rivers in the Columbia River Basin -Economic costs of nutrient pollution in watersheds -Modeling transport and cycling of nutrients in stream and river networks -Effects of water pollution on marginalized and underserved communities Some of my skills and expertise include: Geographic Information Systems, parametric and nonparametric statistics, stable isotope analysis, water quality modeling, and nitrogen biogeochemistry. I am also a strong supporter of reproducible research using coding and version control. For my work, I use R, Python, and GitHub for data analysis, modeling, document development, presentations, and web-based interactive tools.
