About Daniel Wilcox

I am a chemical engineer with broad interests looking for my next opportunity to expand my skills. My recent work has focused on electrically conductive polymers, which has given me experience with semiconductor fabrication, lab-scale chemistry, and material characterization while strengthening my fundamental scientific knowledge. I also have experience with industry-scale processes gained during my time as a metallurgical intern working on molybdenum extraction. This applied internship was valuable experience in translating my classroom-based learning to industrial-scale, real-world situations. I also have experience working with large datasets and developing scripts to sort, catalogue, and extract useful information from them, which I learned while working on a NASA Space Grant studying how the understory of forests recovered from wildfires. I enjoy computer programming, and being able to effectively program has helped me greatly in all my pursuits. While completing my PhD, I learned many things. Some, such as the techniques and foundational knowledge, were specific to my chosen field of study, but many more, such as the importance of collaboration and leadership, will be instrumental to my future success. An effective leader is critical to the success of a project, but the team members are equally important. A good, well-led team will be much greater than the sum of its parts. By mentoring undergraduate researchers and working with multidisciplinary teams, I have gained valuable experience in mentorship and leadership, and I hope to further develop these skills in my future endeavors. Perhaps most importantly, I have learned the importance of effective scientific communication. The fruits of research efforts are only valuable if they can be applied effectively and communicated well so that the broader community can benefit. I have presented and disseminated my work to various audiences in multiple formats, such as journal articles, posters, and formal and informal oral presentations, and have learned to communicate my work effectively for different purposes depending on the experience and needs of my audience. I can do the science well, effectively lead a team to do more than I could ever accomplish alone, apply the science (of my own work and that of others) in varied situations, and communicate the science to others who need to use or understand it.
