About Danielle Moreira

I have a Ph.D. in Animal Biology. I am the coordinator of the Pantanal Base of the Tamanduá Institute, with experience in research into the ecology and conservation of large mammals. My career as a conservation biology scientist began during my undergraduate studies when I completed my scientific initiation in the final year of my Biological Sciences course. Later, during my doctorate, I won a scholarship to conduct part of my research at Duke University, USA, in Dr. Stuart Pimm’s laboratory. During my doctorate, I started volunteering as a project coordinator for the Pró-Tapir program: monitoring and protecting tapirs in the Espírito Santo Atlantic Forest. This program also extends to research on other mammal species and environmental education activities with children. In 2014, I got a research grant to carry out my first post-doctorate, also at Duke University, with tapir monitoring research using the footprint identification technique developed by Wildtrack scientists. I am interested in research that links studies on biodiversity with the implementation of action plans. I work mainly on the following topics: priority areas for conservation, geographic distribution, risk of extinction, conflicts with wild animals, and the history of zoology.
