About Danny Werfel

After over two decades of leadership in both government and the private sector, I am now focused on advancing civic literacy and strengthening public understanding of the essential role government plays in a healthy democracy. I’ve had the privilege of serving in high-level roles across sectors—including as Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, where I helped lead one of the largest and most complex federal agencies through a period of significant transformation. In the private sector, I led the global public sector practice at Boston Consulting Group, working with governments around the world to solve critical challenges and deliver better outcomes for citizens. Today, I am transitioning into academia, where I’ve taken on full-time roles as Executive in Residence at the newly established School of Government and Public Policy at Johns Hopkins University, and as a Distinguished Fellow at the Duke University Polis Center for Politics. These positions allow me to mentor the next generation of public leaders and contribute to research and dialogue around effective governance. I remain engaged in the tax policy and administration space through my service on the Strategic Advisory Board of alliantgroup. My post-IRS mission is clear: to foster a more informed, bipartisan understanding of why government matters, highlight the value of public service, and help bridge the growing gap between citizens and the institutions that serve them.
