About Danuta Sampson

I am translational biomedical researcher, with expertise in optics, optical microscopy, vision science, ophthalmology, and image processing, who seeks to contribute novel instrumentation and methods to translational medical research to make a difference in human health. I have a track record of successful research in universities, medical research institutes, and in executing research projects for the industry. I have spent 12 years working in teams of computer scientists, clinicians, and biologists. This joining of disciplines has resulted in important advances in ophthalmology and neurology. I have published 36 journal papers, given over 20 invited lectures, and obtained several awards. The award I am most proud of was to be selected to serve as an Optica (formerly OSA) Ambassador in 2017. This lifetime distinction recognizes selected Optica young professionals for their continuing efforts to serve the wider optics and photonics community; Optica is the largest optical society globally. Beyond research, I am passionate about science communication, mentoring students of all stages, and developing a more inclusive society. My contributions to promoting science were acknowledged by the special award of the “Science Populariser 2014”, a national Polish prize. This prestigious competition, organized since 2005 jointly by the Science and Scholarship Foundation and the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, is awarded to scientists who significantly contribute to popularising scientific knowledge.
