What is a Consulting Arborist? Basically, it's a professional Arborist, certified to AQF level 5 (Diploma). What do they do? A Consulting Arborist, works in a variety of areas: liaising with Architects on future development concepts, advising on tree suitability, and planting requirements. As a Project Arborist on sub-divisions, civil projects or residential developments ensuring compliance with the DA (Development Application.) Personally, I've been fortunate enough to work with a number of LGA's on various undertakings. Several Tier 1 and Tier 2 civil companies on state and federally funded projects: High St. Fremantle upgrade, Tonkin Hwy/Kalamunda Rd. upgrade, Perth Zoo - Function Centre and Café project, and many more."My tree isn't looking the best, it seems to be lacking in vitality, what can we do?" The initial observation reveals: the species, estimated age, ULE (Useful Life Expectancy) health and condition, retention value, possible hazards, and any pests and diseases. If a more in-depth analysis is required, we look at the soil.'Trees, outsource their stomachs to the soil," what that means is that the tree gains a large percentage of its sustenance from the soil. In our lab, we look at the microbiology, bacteria, nematodes, fungi and protozoa, what type are they, and are they beneficial or harmful? Recently, we purchased a tool (Chlorophyll fluorescence tester) that can predict up to 6 weeks prior to the tree becoming sick. Risk assessment: what's the likelihood of a branch failing, or whole tree failure? There are a variety of tools available to the Consulting Arborist, TRAQ, VALID and QTRA, we use Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA). Travelling all over the state for various LGA's, and civil companies, can be challenging. but also very rewarding.
