Background
About Dave Richardson
I graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BS in Computer Science. The first project I worked on was a bit of change from working in a UNIX environment. I ended up working on a custom sensor solution for nuclear material control and accountability. It was a Windows environment, with National Instruments hardware, controlling an in house developed sensor to prevent people from accessing nuclear material. This was very new to me in that I had not ever had to think about hardware and how software interacted with it. Not long after I developed an image processing application in Visual C++ for materials characterization. After 5 years developing software at Y-12, I was given the opportunity to work as a cyber-security researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Since joining ORNL I've worked with many technologies. I've worked with pretty much everything from FPGAs / micro-controllers / Arduino all the way up the stack. SQL to SOLR, as well as embedded Linux (Raspbery Pi / Beaglebone Black) with custom sensor networks with an Iridium reach-back capability. Most recently, I've been working with Docker containers to deploy services that support Situ, an unsupervised machine learning system to score NetFlow events as anomalous. I now have several years of experience in Elasticsearch / Apache Kafka / Apache NiFi for providing data, and have also been developing a React.js front-end to visualize the data that are being scored by Situ. Additionally, for the last 6 months, I have been embedded in the ORNL SOC for one day a week to help collect feedback from our analysts to help improve the UI and underlying models for Situ. I have had experience in a very wide range of technologies and I enjoy working at ORNL because it provides numerous opportunities to learn more.
