I am a business designer. When we think of design as a noun, we often associate it with made objects - particularly with how they look and perform. But think of design as a verb and suddenly it takes on movement and purpose: to envision, to plan, to construct, to improve. As we move from noun to verb, we also move from objects to objectives. And that opens a world of possibilities. Designers have the capacity to make it better. Skills are required, of course, but beyond that, the best designers have to have a vision. They need to be able to look beyond the existing realities and see new possibilities - not just what was, but what might be. A design mind grapples with the notion that something isn't quite right with the world. Designers don't just think and theorize. They model. They make. They build. Whatever lofty visions design may sometimes aspire to, the process itself is grounded in solid principles and a bias toward action. It's that process that is, itself, designed - for the purpose of transforming possibility into reality. Even with all the dramatic changes being wrought by technology, design remains, and likely always will, a fundamentally human endeavor, fueled by the insights, ideas, passions, and talents of people in pursuit of progress.
