Background
About David Barber
When I signed up for the Computer Programmer/Analyst course at St.Lawrence College, I knew I wanted to work in an industry where my work could help people. During a work placement fair in I was introduced to the healthcare industry, and I haven’t looked back. My favourite projects involve setting out to solve a problem — especially in scenarios where solutions aren't entirely obvious. Some examples of these projects would be: • Working as a team member helping members of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) Executive and the Board of Directors compile a list of key performance indicators. These indicators are tracked on a quarterly basis provide a means of tracking performance against established targets. • Working with end-users, physicians, and hospital administrative staff to design, code, and implement a software tool which is now used to schedule outpatient clinics at KHSC (including Hotel Dieu Hospital and the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario). This software also tracks clinic utilization data which is reported on a quarterly basis. • Leading a project to help implement a web tracking tool for data requests received by Decision Support. This centralizes the data request intake process, and leads to more efficiency across the department. While working on projects like those mentioned above, I like to be as creative and efficient as possible. I always strive to implement the use of technology and time saving measures wherever possible. Tracking ideas and project timelines electronically gives me the ability to stay organized, so I can find an important note from a meeting held months ago, or share a document with a team member quickly. Moving forward, I would like to continue using my analytical skills to drive change and improve processes as a leader. I recently completed the Frontline Leadership training course at KHSC and I am looking to broaden my skills even more in the near future.
