Interested in applications of fractal particles for rheology control. Selected achievements: General colloid science: Developed graduate level course in the analytical chemistry of colloids for Illinois Institute of Technology. Presented this course to both traditional "on campus" and online students. High solids slurry characterization: Working with outside collaborators, developed rheological tests for slurry stability under high shear. Tests were subsequently adapted to resolve customer complaints and recommend modifications to production processes. Fractal particle structure analysis: Used Transmission Electron Microscopy and Image Analysis to qualify new supply source of fumed silica. Customer complaint resolution: Used infrared spectroscopy to identify deterioration of raw material, permitting closure of complaint and modification of raw material storage conditions. Raw material supplier interaction: Used optical microscopy to identify and quantify contaminant in raw material, enabling supplier quality improvement. Aerosol particle production: Developed a new computer model of fumed silica particle formation, contributing to production of particles with novel structure. New product development: Used rheological testing and statistical design of experiments to drive development of surface treated fumed silica for the automotive coatings market.
