About David Carrier

For those interested in how my work is funded, please visit the link in my profile.I work as an independent conservation practitioner with a focus on long term field based monitoring, species recovery, and project development. My work centres on surveys and monitoring, collecting data that feeds into local and national recording schemes and helps build an understanding of long-term trends. A significant amount of time is spent in the field – deploying and checking camera traps, observing species and habitats, and this work is also shifting towards using the latest technologies, including acoustic monitoring, drones, and environmental DNA (eDNA), to better understand how wildlife uses a landscape over time. Much of this work happens quietly and incrementally, but it forms the basis for more informed conservation decisions later on.Alongside this, a considerable amount of my time is spent on unfunded project development work. This includes research, mapping, site visits, conversations with landowners, community groups, and other stakeholders, and exploring whether ideas have the potential to become viable conservation projects. Much of this work never progresses beyond an initial stage, but it is essential groundwork for the projects that do – from habitat restoration through to more complex species recovery efforts such as water vole reintroductions.Alongside my independent practice, I am the founder of Kernow Conservation, a community interest company delivering nature recovery projects in Cornwall with landowners, volunteers, and partners. Kernow Conservation has its own governance, funding, and activities. In addition to LinkedIn, I share regular updates about my work publicly on Instagram if you'd like to follow
