About David Charles

Over 40 years experience as a geotechnical and construction engineer. Have served in a variety of technical and administrative positions in the consulting engineering business during this period. Experience includes serving as Senior Geotechnical Engineer and Consultant for geotechnical site evaluation, analysis, and evaluation of subsurface conditions for foundations, structures, environmental remediation, design of excavations and pavements. Specialization in deep foundations, soft soils solutions, and installation and monitoring of geotechnical instrumentation (soft soils and excavations). Extensive experience in earth embankment design, slope stability analysis and deep foundation construction. Started career as a field construction and resident engineer, geotechnical engineer/project manager and subsequently became involved in overall management of consulting engineering firm. Have served in a variety of administrative positions with Duffield Associates including CEO and Vice President/Director of Operations. Active in many engineering organizations including the Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA, formerly ASFE), American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and ASCE. Have taught various courses at the University of Delaware Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering since 1992, including graduate/undergraduate courses in geotechnical and foundation engineering. Served as a Director of Terra Insurance Company (2005-2016), a company that provides professional liability insurance for geo-professional, environmental and civil engineering firms. Most recently, have served as Senior Engineering Project Manager for Greggo & Ferrara, Inc, a heavy construction contractor, on two major projects that are part of the new US 301 Mainline toll project from the MD/DE line to SR-1. These include US 301-Section 3, MD State Line to Levels Rd project (approx $50 mil) and the Toll Infrastructure Project (approx $8 mil).
