SAFETY - AMENITY - ENVIRONMENT It is becoming increasingly urgent for communities living on the urban-rural fringe, to take the lead in planning and mitigation to manage bushfire risks. Bushfire planning and mitigation is about striking an appropriate balance between safety, amenity and the environment. Its about incorporating the latest bushfire regulations into all new buildings, managing fuel loads and separation distances and educating the community about bushfire hygiene around their own properties. The current attitude of passing responsibility for mitigation and suppression to resource-starved government agencies is not sustainable. State agencies like DFES and WA's Parks and Wildlife Service have considerable skills in bushfire response, but they can not be everywhere at all times.
