About David Drissel

I am a professor of social sciences at Iowa Central Community College with over twenty years of teaching experience. I served as department chair of social sciences, education and psychology, and physical education at Iowa Central from 1995 to 2001. Since that time I have been a full-time faculty member instructing courses in the social science department. I have instructed over twenty different courses, designed and proposed the creation of several new courses at Iowa Central, designed new online courses, written and received financial grants for academic programs, advised student government, lobbied state legislators on behalf of community colleges, organized special student activities, recruited and advised students, and chaired campus political forums and voter registration campaigns. I have served as a member of the campus diversity team, international focus team, final exam week team, faculty senate, curriculum and instruction council, outcomes assessments team, and at-risk students team. I chaired the business department external review committee, institutional values team, service learning team, and social science A.A. degree committee. I have studied abroad in China (Fulbright Scholar), Czech/Slovak Republics (Fulbright Scholar), United Kingdom (Oxford Roundtable), Costa Rica, Germany, France, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Spain, Netherlands, Austria, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Canada, and many other countries. I have presented papers at numerous academic conferences and published articles in academic journals and periodicals such as the Cambridge Review of International Affairs, Asian Journal of Criminology, International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, International Journal of Diversity, the Global Studies Journal, and the International Journal of Humanities. I have also had chapters published in several books, including China and the West, Network Apocalypse, and Habitus of the Hood, and the Biographical Dictionary of China. Specialties: Academic specializations include international relations, comparative politics, American government, social problems, social change and development, social stratification, Asian history and culture, East European history and culture, Middle Eastern history and culture, urban space, migration and diaspora, computer-mediated communication, Internet governance, social movements, post-communist/post-conflict transitions, youth subcultures, social networks, criminology, and popular culture.
