Background

About David Gallant

David is a Canadian historian, having completed a PhD at the University of Calgary in 2016. David has also worked as a history instructor, editor, historical researcher, public historian, and ESL teacher in the past several years. Since September 2021, David has been teaching undergraduate courses in Canadian history, Canadian Studies, the First World War, and Second World War at Mount Royal University in Calgary. Since 2011, he has also been a history instructor at the University of Calgary, teaching undergraduate courses in Canadian history and Canadian Studies (as well as Canadian-American relations). From 2017 to 2019, and from August 2020 to March 2025, David was employed as a historian at Parks Canada's History and Commemoration Branch, Indigenous Affairs and Cultural Heritage Directorate. At Parks Canada, David conducted research and wrote reports on a wide range of subjects in Canadian and Indigenous history. In addition, David worked on the National Commemoration Program, conducting research and writing plaque texts for national historic people, places, and events. From May 2019 to March 2020 (contract), David was the Indigenous Peoples Subject Editor for the Canadian Encyclopedia (Historica Canada), where he edited, updated, and published more than 150 encyclopedia entries in Indigenous and Canadian history. As a PhD candidate, researcher, and graduate teaching assistant at the University of Calgary from 2009 to 2016, David gained valuable research, teaching, public speaking, classroom management, and writing skills, including the utilization of online databases as well as primary and secondary source research to complete short and lengthy research projects for the university. David's articles and book chapters on Canada's First World War experience have appeared in the historical journal Manitoba History, as well as in a First World War centenary publication titled The Frontier of Patriotism: Alberta and the First World War (University of Calgary Press, 2016). Additionally, David's articles on Indigenous and Canadian history have appeared in the Canadian Encyclopedia. Finally, David recently completed an eight-year stint teaching Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) courses at Bow Valley College in Calgary (February 2017 to April 2025). This was a rewarding position that helped recent immigrants improve their English language skills, gain the necessary tools to find a rewarding job in Canada, attend college or university, or get accredited for educational or professional qualifications gained in their home countries.
